Getting to and from school safely

As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.

Keep our school community safe by:

  • driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
  • being a good role model
  • never calling your child from across the road
  • using the safest place to cross the road.

For parents and carers of younger children

Discuss with your child how to be safe when:

Also talk about and practise:

  • safe travel routes
  • plans for when unexpected things happen
  • what to do in wet weather.

Riding your bike or scooter to school

  • All students need a helmet when riding their bikes/scooters
  • Lower primary students (Years Kindergarten,1 and 2) riding bikes/scooters to school should be supervised by an adult
  • Students reported for poor riding habits may be asked to leave their bikes at home
  • Please check that straps on helmets are firm when clipped up
  • Please model safe riding behaviours for your child
  • Bikes/scooters are to be kept in the bike rask during school hours and are out of bounds at recess and lunch

Subsidised school travel

Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.

  • The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
  • The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.

Surfside buslines

Surside buslines is our local provider. To apply for a student bus pass, follow the steps through the transport website.

If you are successful, your bus pass will be forwarded to the school office for collection. If unsuccessful, you will be notified by mail.

Your child will need to apply for a new bus pass if they are:

  • entering into grade 3
  • repeating a grade
  • if your child has changed home address and/or school, you must notify your school immediately and arrange for a new application form to be completed and your old bus pass returned. This new form will be submitted to Surfside Buslines for assessment.

A replacement bus pass can be arranged from your bus driver at a cost of $15.

If your child does not have a bus pass, they can still catch the bus but need to pay a fare. Your child does not have to wait at a bus stop for the bus, they can wait anywhere along the School bus route and hail the school bus, as long as this is somewhere safe for the bus to pull over.

Conditions of travel

  • Admittance to the bus is by pass or cash fare.
  • Bus passes must be presented on entry to the bus morning and afternoon.
  • Passes are for use by the bearer only.
  • Bus passes must be be shown on request to a Company Inspector.
  • Smoking, eating and drinking are all prohibited on the bus.
  • Students must conduct themselves in an orderly manner.

Parents and guardians, remember it is your responsibility to ensure your child is equipped to travel to and from school.
